Should I Have a Facebook & Twitter Account?

The Answer is : It Depends On YOU…..The Business Owner

I get told all the time…  “I need Facebook!  I need Twitter!”  It’s all the rage…Facebook, Twitter, Linked In You’re a Local Business…Should You Have a Facebook and Twitter Account?

Before you  jump into Social Media there are few things you should consider….

Being social takes a lot of time and a lot of effort to be successful.  Take a realistic look at the time you have to dedicate to being truly social and make sure if you do have the time that you are creative enough to have something relevant to say.  If you aren’t creative hire someone who is.

What are you expectations from going social?  Beside the time and effort you also need to realistically evaluate your expectations from your social media campaign.  Just because someone else is on Facebook doesn’t mean you should be.  It also doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from being social.

However, I can’t stress this enough, YOU SHOULD PROTECT YOUR BRAND and CLAIM SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS RELATED TO YOUR BUSINESS NOW!  When the time is right and you can truly integrate social media into your overall marketing campaigns you will have saved yourself precious time and you will have secured a name that reflects your brand.  That name may not be available when you are finally ready to go social.

Your sales cycle is relevant to the results you should expect from social media.  How long is your typical sales cycle?  Knowing and applying your knowledge about your business will greatly affect how you should use social media.

For long term sales cycles you should use social media to brand your company and become a trusted resource within your community.  Mix in promotions and specials with 90% branding and 10% sales.  For a short sales cycle focus more on specials and promotions, refer a friend, etc.  and mix in branding efforts to become a trusted resource.

The two issues at the heart of determining if you are setting the proper expectations of social media and the results it can produce; TIME & CYCLE.
